On November 4, the "First Thursday" from 5 – 8 pm  at the Pendleton Home Store you will have the opportunity  for one evening only to view a remarkable exhibit  of rare and historic Monterey Furniture from the private collection of Jerralynn Ness and Kent "Bernie" Thurber of Portland. This Spanish Revival style furniture was in production from 1924 to 1943 by the Mason Manufacturing Company.  The furniture on display is similar to the collection original to the Oregon Caves Chateau.  The Chateau’s collection is considered the largest public collection in the Northwest. Jerralynn and Bernie have been invaluable to the Friends in their advice and counsel.  With their help and  recent grant from the Oregon Cultural Trust  we have begun the restoration of the Chateau’s collection.

"The Oregon Cultural Trust grant was instrumental starting the process to restore the Chateau’s rare historical collection.  We believe it will also leverage further financial support from the NPS and encourage the donation of additional pieces from collectors. Restoring the collection is a cornerstone of the Chateau’s overall renovation."    James R. Dole, President Friends of the Oregon Caves and Chateau Board of Directors.

The Friends of the Oregon Caves and Chateau  is a non-profit organization cooperating with the National Park Service in the preservation, stewardship and improvement of the cultural and natural resources of the Oregon Caves National Monument.  The Friends will benefit the monument through concern, care and philanthropy of dedicated individuals.  They will help raise project donations and capital funds to restore and improve the facilities and to involve the community and visitors in the future plans of the monument.
Pendleton is one of several long time Oregon Companies who are working in cooperation with the Friends to restore the Historic Oregon Caves Chateau – one of the three Great Lodges in Oregon.  Timberline and Crater Lake have been restored, now it is time to restore the Chateau.

For this night only everything in the Pendleton Home Store will be discounted and a contribution will be made to the Friends for each purchase.  "Pendleton is pleased to be working with the Friends of the Oregon Caves and Chateau in the restoration of an Oregon icon. Both the Oregon Caves National Monument and Pendleton Woolen Mills recently celebrated 100 years in Oregon which makes this partnership particularly  special. Our Philanthropic Partnership  philosophy is to do what we can to support events, organizations and  historic properties in all parts of Oregon.   This opportunity to support the Friends with a one-evening only display of remarkable Monterey Furniture and a  unique fundraising opportunity.  A First Thursday Shopping night at  the Pendleton Home store is a win win for everyone."  Robert Christnacht,  Pendleton Home

Between now and December 31, 2010, you can become a Founder of the Friends of the Oregon Caves and Chateau.  This is a wonderful way to honor a special birthday or anniversary, honor a family member who worked at the Monument, or in memory of a loved one. This is a great way to leave a legacy for the next 100 years.   The First Fifty Founders will be included in special event, strategic discussions on the future plans for the restorations and be honored in the Chateau and in commemorative publications.    To become a FOUNDER, learn more about the restoration of the Oregon Caves Chateau, the Monterey Furniture Collection or the Guide Dormitory contact  Sue Densmore, Executive Director of the Friends at 541-944-1139 or [email protected].  You can learn more and contribute directly to the restoration on the website  www.Friendsocac.org.  Also if you have Monterey Furniture, historic lighting or other artifacts that you would like to contribute to the restoration please contact us.
